Phonics

Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, is a whole-school government verified phonic programme for children from Year R to Year 2. It is designed to teach synthetic phonics, creating fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. Read Write Inc sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic knowledge and skills.

The children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language, how to sound blend words and how to spell. The children read books with words they can sound out and blend. This enables them to have early success in reading and build confidence.

At Fiddlers Lane we use the RWI mnemonics to aid in our writing sessions.

In Year R, during the Autumn term, the children learn to read and write the first set of phonics, called Speed Sounds Set 1. 

At Fiddlers Lane Commity Primary School we want all pupils to begin their journey to read with confidence, develop a love of reading and apply their skills competently to writing. Therefore, a consistent and structured approach across the phase will support a smooth transition as children progress and gain skills, involving parents and giving teachers the flexibility but security to plan to the needs of their cohort.

The importance of reading at home

Reading with your child regularly is essential to practise and apply their phonics knowledge as well as their understanding of a range of texts. We will send reading books home weekly, please ensure your child’s reading book is in school with their reading record so they can be changed. 

Reading non school books is essential too! We want to create learners who read for pleasure, not simple because they are asked to. Please let us know if your child has a favourite book so we can share it with them! Reading to your child models phonics and reading skills, we are sure they will recognise sounds and be reading along with you in no time!
